Oh, what I can do with SUPER-GLUE!

In the mall a few days ago, David saw a large "Lightening McQueen" (Disney/Pixar movie) backpack. If you know my son, you know that he is obsessed with all things cars. Unfortunately, the backpack was too large for him, and a little too expensive for us--beside the fact that he already had a new little black backpack ($6 Walmart bargain!).

Fortunately, this morning I was able to find some inexpensive craft pieces (meant to make magnets) for a few dollars that I was able to super-glue to his backpack. (Though, who knows how long it will last!) I also put his name on the top with iron-ons. I'm undecided though, if I should have done that. Is it a security risk? What do you think? Posted by Picasa

Great job with the craft project! I don't know if putting a name on a backpack is a bad thing or not, it could be, or it could be just fine. It could be unsafe in a very public place, everyone would know his name...but then on the other hand you (probably) call your child by name when you are out. If you load the backpack with toys and such to go to a friends house, I see no problem there. However I am unable to look at things like this from both points of view.

I love it and I'm sure David does too! In terms of the name...I think it's 6 and one half dozen...like Jeannie said, they could hear you say his name...I think the key is teaching the child about strangers and perhaps having a secret code word like Orson Scott Card discussed in The Lost Boys? That really struck me as a great way to teach your kids about a possible stranger needing to pick them up.

I agree with Jeannie that you did a wonderful job on the backpack! I don't think it's much of a security risk. I think Angela's advice about teaching him about strangers and having a code word is great. He's probably old enough to understand that concept now.
